Water heaters are familiar fixtures in most homes. Tank type water heaters come in different varieties – gas, oil electric.  This refers to the type of burner used to heat the water.  Energy efficiencies between the different types of burners on the tank water heaters can differ greatly.

Tank Water Heaters provide a large volume of dependable, low-cost hot water.  Residential tank water heaters typically store between 20 and 80 gallons of hot water hot throughout, usually at the factory setting of 120°F.  They are the most common way to heat water in the United States.

The disadvantage is that over time, the water inside the tank cools down, activating the heating system to heat the water back up.  Additionally, when heavy use exhausts the hot water, there is a significant delay before hot water is available again.  Larger tanks tend to provide hot water with less temperature fluctuation at moderate flow rates.

Instantaneous Water Heaters, also called Tankless Water Heaters are just that.  They do not have a tank, and therefore are thought to be more energy efficient.  It only heats the water it needs as it passes through, and therefore energy is not wasted by heating extra water all day that is not in use.

Tankless Water Heaters became popular when the government was giving big money in rebates to install them. Most tankless water heaters were installed improperly due to under sized, for the water needed, and many had to have larger gas lines run, bigger gas meters. Most have trouble due to the fact that they get hot then cold instead of a steady stream of hot water.

Right now, tankless water heaters are not as popular as other options due to higher installation and maintenance costs, however, they are extremely efficient and do not take us much space in the home.

Leggett’s experts have installed and service many systems for customers in the greater Harrisburg region. We also provide ongoing service for tankless water heaters, which involves an inspection of the system and a clean flush of vinegar to ensure proper use for years to come.
