The History of the Modern Air Conditioning System

When the heat starts becoming unbearable during summer, many people turn to their reliable air conditioning systems to cool down. However, in the times before this brilliant system was invented, people had to use creative methods to keep themselves cool.

Today, you can control the cooling in your home by programming your desired temperature, and it all started with the invention of the modern air conditioner in 1902.

Who Invented the Air Conditioner?

Willis Haviland Carrier invented the modern air conditioner in 1902. The skilled engineer was tasked with solving a humidity issue in a printing press in Brooklyn, New York, when he developed the mechanical cooling system. Carrier’s system passed air through coils filled with cold water, cooling the air while eliminating moisture to regulate room humidity.

While other forms of cooling systems had been around years prior to his invention, Willis Carrier’s system was a life-changing invention that greatly improved working environments and human comfort. Even though they were initially invented for industrial purposes, air conditioners can be found in millions of homes today.

Who Is Willis Carrier?

Willis Haviland Carrier was born in 1876 in Angola, New York. Carrier first worked for Buffalo Forge Company, where he invented the life-changing cooling system that is still used today. After Carrier patented his apparatus, he began testing and refining the technology behind his system. As he realized the great benefit of and demand for his invention, he formed Carrier Engineering Corporation in 1915. The company was committed to improving air conditioning technology and excelled in its ability to control temperature and humidity levels.

Today’s air conditioners fundamentally operate using Carrier’s Rational Psychrometric Formulae, which he formulated in 1911. The formula is used as the basis of all calculations in the modern-day air conditioning industry. Because of his great contribution to the industry, Carrier became an international name, and he is known as the father of modern air conditioning.

Now, Carrier Engineering is dedicated to pioneering the way forward by investing in advanced research and development and partnering with the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to help sustain Earth’s limited resources.
