Pull the fire extinguisher out from the back of the kitchen cabinet, check the batteries in your smoke detectors and CO detectors, practice your fire escape plan and more. Fire Prevention Week is October 3 – 9.
Here are some tips on how to improve fire safety in your home!
- Test smoke alarms and CO detectors every month, replacing the batteries as needed
- Replace smoke alarms and CO detectors every 10 years
- Establish an escape plan and practice it every month with your family so everyone knows what to do in case of a fire
- Be sure you have a multi-purpose fire extinguisher in an easily accessible area of the home
- Don’t use frayed or damaged extension cords and power strips
- Never leave a hot stove or oven unattended
- If your home has a fireplace or chimney, have it cleaned and maintained regularly
- Keep your heating system in good repair with regular tune-ups!
With these tips, you’ll have a great head start on fire safety, but we recommend you continue to research best practices and other methods to stay safe during a fire by visiting the National Fire Protection Association’s website at www.NFPA.org.
