During winter, heating is necessary for homes and businesses in central Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. If your heating stops working correctly, some simple DIYs can offer a solution. Prepare to restore your warmth and comfort by learning these tips and tricks.

3 Common Heating Problems and Solutions

In a true emergency, you should contact Leggett Inc. for heating repairs. Our experts provide 24/7 services to keep homes and businesses safe in our central Pennsylvania community. In non-urgent cases, try one of these remedies based on the machinery and system you have.

1. Oilheat System

When your oilheat system doesn’t work correctly, check to see if all the emergency switches are on, if the circuit breaker tripped or if there’s fuel in the storage tank. Adjust the thermostat to 10 or more degrees above your room temperature, then press the “Reset” button only once.

2. Electric Heat

To restore an electric heating system, check whether the air filter is clean or needs replacement. Ensure your circuit breaker is on and reset it if required. Turn the thermostat off for 30 seconds. Then, set the system to 10 degrees above your room temperature when you turn it back on.

3. Gas/Propane

If you smell gas or propane, don’t try to restart or fix the system yourself. Leave the property and call our company and the fire department. When there isn’t a smell but you have doubts about fixing the system, we can still come for an emergency restart. Otherwise, you can try one of these remedies for restoring heat with a pilot light or electric ignitor.

  • Pilot light: When there isn’t a gas odor, you should check if the thermostats, switches and breakers are turned on and the pilot is lit. If not, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your appliance’s make and model. Relight the pilot and set the thermostat 10 degrees above your room temperature.
  • Electric ignitor: After confirming your electric ignitor doesn’t have a gas odor, ensure your circuit breaker is on. If needed, reset the system by turning the thermostat off for at least 30 seconds. After turning the switches back on, set your system to 10 degrees above room temperature.
