Why is R-22 Being Phased Out?

It was discovered in the 1980’s that refrigerants that contain bromine or chlorine like R-22, used in most home, office and many industry air conditioning units since the 1960’s deplete the Ozone Layer when leaked to the atmosphere. As of 2010 all newly manufactured air conditioners in the United States come with a different refrigerant, R-410A.

What is the Difference between R-22 and R-410A?

R-410a is more efficient to use as it does a better job absorbing and releasing heat. In addition it is more environmental friendly and doesn’t harm the ozone layer like R-22.  The biggest difference is that R-410a is used for all new manufactured air conditioners.

Is R22 Still Made?

R-22 is still made, in limited quantities, to repair equipment, but in declining consumption allowances each year. This year we saw a, 28% deduction in consumption allowances. To date we are at 13% of our industries allowance, 9% next year, 4% the year after and finally with a zero allowance in 2020.

What should I do if I have R-22 Equipment?

It is considered best interest to consider replacing old R-22 equipment rather than repairing it and adding R-22.

Refrigerant should not need to be added to a system unless there is a leak. By adding R-22 to your system without finding and repairing the leak, there is no guarantee on how long the R-22 will last.
